Historic Fernandina Buildings
Fernandina Beach, FL
Fernandina Beach has had a settlement of some type since the Spaniards came to the New World and settled St. Augustine. Down at the harbor, there is a historic district with some very cool buildings.
Here is the train depot station building from the first Atlantic-Gulf of Mexico railroad, opened just before the Civil War:
Here is Villa Las Palmas, built as a gift from a wealthy and older businessman for his 17 year old bride:
It has a beautiful fountain out front:
Here is a quick link to the history of the building.
We also liked the Florida House Inn, one of the oldest bed and breakfast inns in the area.
It was built as a boarding house for railroad workers when the railroad was built, just before the Civil War. You can stay there now, and we went in for afternoon drinks a few times. Very nice. They remodeled the property and reopened in December 2010. Here is their website.
Another Amelia Island bed and breakfast is the Williams House. It was the first stop on the Ghost Tour walking tour that we took one evening, walking around the historic district looking for ghosts. Jordan really enjoyed that!
And my favorite shot from the ghost tour:
Those are my girls!
